How long does it take to build credit from scratch?

By Yinka Olayokun Published Reviewed

Direct Answer

Most people can generate a FICO score within 6 months of opening their first credit account, reach the Good tier (670+) within 12–18 months, and Very Good (740+) within 2–3 years. The required ingredients are at least one account, six months of on-time payments, and utilisation kept under 10% before each statement closes.

The minimum recipe for a score

FICO requires at least one account open for six months and at least one account updated within the last six months. A single secured credit card or credit-builder loan satisfies both. After 6 months, you'll have a score in the 620–680 range purely from clean on-time behaviour.

The fastest legitimate path

Month 0: open a secured card ($200–$500 deposit) plus become an authorised user on a parent or partner's well-managed card. Month 6: apply for a true unsecured starter card. Month 12: utilisation under 10%, all payments on time, add a second card. Month 18–24: target 700+; most mainstream cash-back cards are now in range.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does paying rent build credit?
Only if your landlord reports to the bureaus or you use a service like Experian Boost or RentTrack. Standard rent payments are invisible to the credit system without one of these.
Is a credit-builder loan worth it?
Yes for people with no file at all. Self, MoneyLion, and most local credit unions offer them. You 'pay' the loan first, then receive the money at the end, on-time payments are reported all the way through.
Can I build credit without going into debt?
Yes. Use the card for one small recurring bill (Spotify, phone), pay the statement in full each month. You'll never carry a balance and you'll build credit identically to someone who carries debt.
